Title: Designer/Engineer 

Location: Whitby, Ontario / Brampton, Ontario (1 position per location)

Job Function:  To design water distribution, storm and sanitary sewer, and road systems for residential and industrial subdivisions, municipal reconstruction projects and site plans and to provide related plans. 

Department Function:  To provide professional engineering designs, drawings, reports, and specifications. 

Responsibilities: 

  1. Plans and organizes the design and drafting of engineering drawings for municipal servicing and road reconstruction projects, environmental assessments, etc, in accordance with Project Managers’ specifications and established work-hour budgets.
  2. Provides input regarding design and drafting budgets for proposal preparation. 
  3. Calculates pipe sizes, drainage areas, road and area grades, distribution networks, appurtenances placement and earth work quantities.  Makes revisions as instructed by the Project Manager and/or regulatory and municipal officials. 
  4. Assembles, assesses, and incorporates municipal design standards, utility layouts and related reference materials in preparing designs.   
  5. Directs assigned drafting staff in the production of drawings by providing conceptual sketches of designs and information on design elements. Reviews and approves produced drawings prior to formal presentation. 
  6. Submits designs to regulatory and municipal approval officials, when directed.  Develops and maintains relationships with approval officials. 
  7. Prepares preliminary and detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates for municipal servicing and road projects.
  8. Prepares pre-engineering survey requirements through site visits. 
  9. Reports to Project Managers on project progress and costs. 
  10. Keeps project design records and files. 
  11. Performs related duties and tasks as assigned or required. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Post-secondary education in civil engineering or engineering technology. 
  2. Minimum five (5) years experience in design of municipal servicing and grading for subdivisions and site plans. 
  3. May have a Professional Engineers license or C.E.T. designation.
  4. Strong organizational, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills. 
  5. Works well individually and with others in a team environment.
  6. Experience utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D.
